So we just got a whole week off for midterm break! I really cannot believe it is half way through already - but then i can believe because we have done so many amazing things! So for break, me and two of my friends, Talia and Erin, were on the South Island of New Zealand traveling halfway down the east coast. We stayed in hostels each night, cooked our own foods some nights, scheduled what we wanted to do that morning, and were completely on our own. It was really refreshing and wonderful - and I felt so independent.
First Stop - Picton. One night in a cute hostel. Hike. Food. Gesturing Drawing at the beach ( we got some stares I think while we were drawing one person in strange postures). Meeting a boy from Switzerland who we took to dinner because it was his birthday and he was by himself. Open air carriage train to Christchurch.
Second Stop - Christchurch. Two nights in a hostel in the city. Taxi driver tells us of the earthquakes that hit two weeks ago. So when will the next one hit? We don't know, he says - maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow night, who knows? That's great to hear right when we get in.....But no worries - we were alright!
Walking around the city. Indian food. Drawing in the botanic gardens. Art Museums and galleries. Bus stop to top of huge hill to see all of Christchurch below us and visiting the Sign of Takahe - a fortress-like castle turned restaurant that was really cute.
I have 3 more nights to write about- and only 3 minutes left on the internet cafe - so come back soon to see the rest of the midterm break trip! It includes whales and seals too!!!
I'm in Melbourne, Australia now and for the next 2 weeks!!!!
Thanks to everyone who is reading this - it means so much to me that I get to share this with all of you!
Love, Megan
Although it can be cheap, not everyone will enjoy the hosteling experience. Find out reasons why you may not want to stay in a hostel while traveling.
